Every day I’m out in the field giving estimates and doing jobs, and I keep seeing the same confusion from homeowners about how to properly get a sewer line repair or replacement estimate.
So I made this short video to give you a clear checklist of what a good estimate should include — and what you should (and shouldn’t) do.

1. Don’t Say “I Need a New Sewer Line”
When you call a contractor, don’t lead with “I need a new sewer line.”
That statement immediately closes the door on possible repairs (like pipe lining or spot repairs). Instead, simply say you’re having issues and would like an inspection and options.
2. Never Share One Contractor’s Price with Another
If the first company gives you an inflated price and the next one “beats it by 10%,” you can still end up overpaying. Keep each bid confidential.
3. Always Require the Camera Video
Any legitimate company should provide the full inspection video.
I personally post every video online so you (or a friend/family member) can review it from anywhere and make an informed decision.
4. Ask for a Guarantee That It Will Pass Inspection
If a contractor is installing or repairing your sewer line, they should guarantee that the finished work will pass inspection.
5. Is the Warranty Transferable?
Ask if the warranty (some claim 50–80 years) can be transferred to a new owner if you sell the house. This is a big deal for resale value.
6. Don’t Feel Pressured to Sign on the Spot
Your sewer line was working before the blockage. It will usually hold long enough for you to get multiple bids. I never ask anyone to sign a contract the same day.
7. Make Sure USA (Underground Service Alert) Is Called
Before any digging, the contractor must call USA (811). This free service takes up to 3 business days and marks gas, water, electric, and fiber lines.
If a contractor wants to start immediately, make sure the contract states you are not responsible if any unmarked utilities are hit. It’s the law.
8. Always Get at Least Three Bids
Three bids give you real options and price comparison. Just remember: don’t share the numbers between companies.
9. Know Exactly What the Change Orders Are
This is one of the most important points.
You may know the starting price, but do you know the final price?
Many companies add expensive change orders once work begins.

10. Check the Contractor with the CSLB
Before you hire anyone, look them up on the California State License Board (CSLB) website. Verify their license is active, they have proper bonding, and their insurance is current. You do not want problems if someone gets hurt on your property.
Final Advice
Get everything in writing — and read the back of the contract as carefully as the front.
