In Sacramento, video camera sewer inspection is an essential service for assessing the condition of your sewer lines. During our latest inspection of a local property, we encountered both cast iron and ABS pipes and identified significant issues, including tree-root blockages. Inspection Walkthrough
We started at the cleanout for the back cottage and pushed the camera toward the front house. This section ran through plastic pipe before transitioning into cast iron.
Next, we accessed the line from the cleanout on the back side of the main house and continued toward the street. Here we traveled through ABS plastic pipe, which transitioned into cast iron, then back into a short section of ABS, before entering what appears to be transite (Orangeburg) pipe.
Unfortunately, we encountered a huge tree root intrusion that completely blocked the camera from going any further.
What We Found
- Pipe Materials: Mixed system — ABS, cast iron, and transite/Orangeburg
- Layout: Back cottage cleanout → front house (cast iron) → main house back cleanout → street direction (ABS → cast iron → ABS → transite)
- Major Defect: Large, active tree root intrusion (could not pass with camera)
- Access: Good cleanout access at both the back cottage and main house
The heavy root intrusion in the transite section is a serious concern and will likely cause repeated clogs or complete blockages if not addressed soon.
Recommendations
We recommend:
- Hydro jetting to remove the root mass as soon as possible.
- Camera re-inspection after cleaning to evaluate the full extent of damage.
- Pipe repair or lining (especially in the transite section) to prevent roots from returning.
